College Football Playoff Proposal

Division I-A College Football still remains the only organized sport in America that does not determine a team champion by way of a structured playoff system. The controversy of choosing a clear cut national champion will remain as long as there is no playoff system. Our proposal creates a playoff system that results in minimal changes to the current system. It also brings meaning and interest back to the Bowl games which have lost their appeal.

Proposal Highlights

The matchups for the First Round are determined by the BCS (a consolidated computerized ranking system). The top (8) teams would compete in the (4) bowl games shown in the bracket. This is very similar to how the current Bowl matchups are selected.

The winners of the (4) Bowl games in the First Round will advance to the final Bowl where two Semi-Final games and a Championship game will be played to determine the National Champion.

This format is very similar to the "Final Four" setting in College Basketball and would renew interest in the crowning of a National Champion.

The Bowls rotate through the five positions of the Playoff Bracket.

This playoff system results in minimal changes to the current system.

Disadvantages of the current system of determining the National Champion...

The current BCS system is a step in the right direction, however, a system with only one meaningful Championship Game leaves all the other bowl games in meaningless situations. And what happens when there are three undefeated teams at the end of the year or multiple same record teams at the top three or four spots in the polls like the previous years.

Merging the BCS with a playoff system is the solution.
